A Balanced Plate: Empowering Young Leaders at the City of Chandler's Youth Leadership Conference

Heart of Sol Foundation had the honor of collaborating with the City of Chandler's youth initiative, Lead Chandler, as part of its Youth Leadership Conference, Level Up: The Recipe for Success. The conference brought together young individuals eager to develop their leadership skills, explore their potential, and gain practical wisdom for navigating their futures.
As part of the conference, Heart of Sol Foundation presented "A Balanced Plate," an interactive leadership workshop designed to help young people understand how to pursue their ambitions without losing sight of their personal well-being, values, and identity.
What's on Your Plate?
Every day, we make decisions that shape who we become. From the habits we develop and the relationships we nurture to the priorities we establish, each choice contributes to the direction of our lives. For this workshop, we introduced a simple but meaningful analogy: Our lives are like plates, and everything we choose to put on them influences our ability to grow and succeed.
Each item of food on the plate represented an ingredient in life, including our habits, decisions, relationships, responsibilities, and lifestyle choices.
We encouraged participants to reflect on three important questions:
What's currently on my plate? Identifying the habits, commitments, and influences that occupy their time and energy.
What's holding me back? Recognizing patterns, distractions, or choices that may prevent them from reaching their goals.
What ingredients should I add or replace? Exploring practical changes that can help them build a healthier, more intentional path toward their aspirations.
The purpose was not to encourage young people to fill their plates with more responsibilities, but to help them understand the importance of creating a balanced life that supports both personal growth and long-term success.
Learning Through Personal Experiences
Heart of Sol Foundation's Founder, Sol Tinio, and Board Co-Chair, Jayar, shared personal stories from their journeys between the ages of 17 and 25, reflecting the same stage of life as the young people attending the conference. Both speakers discussed the challenges, responsibilities, habits, and decisions that shaped their early adulthood. They reflected on what was once on their plates, the ingredients they eventually needed to remove or replace, and the new habits and perspectives they adopted to move closer to their personal goals. By sharing their own experiences, Sol and Jayar hoped to remind participants that success is not simply about achieving milestones. It is also about becoming intentional with the choices we make along the way. Leadership begins with learning how to lead ourselves.
